How to system restore Sony Vaio Ubuntu?
I installed Ubuntu on my Sony Vaio laptop a week or two ago, but it's really messed up and I'd like to reset my computer to factory default settings but I have no idea how. I know how to get to the BIOS settings, but there's nothing in there for system restore. Help would be appreciated. And yeah, I already backed up all of the stuff I want.

can I repair Hard drive using a sony vaio recovery cd ?
I hv Sony vaio notebook.Recently when I start it it shows only blue screen and nothing else.I hv a recovery CD .I want to know whether i can repair my hard drive (if it has crashed) including saving all my data using recover cd? Also I want to know how to use recovery cd?

if the hard drive has sustained functional damage then NO. The recovery CD only restores configuration of the original factory settings to functioning hardware. Most of the time, Bluescreens in windows are because of hardware problems. take the computer to a specialist and have them check the hardware such as the memory, the pci cards and the hard drive.

If you start the notebook with a Linux CD, you might be able to recover your data. You'll need an external drive to save it to. You'll have to run the dd program in Linux (oe ddrescue, which will work even better.) http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/learn-the-dd-command-362506/

Media Gallery has stopped working sony vaio?
I have a Sony Vaio VPCS131FM and whenever I press the Vaio butoon before the program will launch I get a message "Media Gallery has stopped working." I get an option to "debug" but that does not fix the problem and the program automatically closes. I am running windows 7. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thanks!

Can i put an English keyboard on a Sony Vaio from France?
I saw a Vaio on Ebay I like for a decent price only the keyboard is French, so I was just wondering if I can buy an English keyboard and swap them out? Anyone know for sure? Thanks. It's a Sony Vaio PCG-FX605.

Sony Vaio VGN-FZ280E
What is the problem with my Sony vaio?
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ280E that only boots up if I hold the delete key. If I don hold it, it beeps like crazy. If I try without the DDR2 memory, I can hear the hard drive but get nothing on the screen. If I try without the hard drive but leave the memory, it beeps but I got the welcome message from Sony Vaio. I have tried several memory sticks and the same thing happens. Maybe some one out there want to help me and has the ability to do it. Thanks.

Usually when it beeps it means the ram is incompatible with the computer. Did you try putting in your old one and starting up again. Did that work? Feel free to email me, and tell me the specs of your computer and ram you brought.

So if you want to reformat the laptop to the factory settings all you have to do is obtain a legal copy of the operating system that you are using at the moment ( ex: windows XP or Ubuntu). Then place the operating system discs into the CD/DVD drive on your laptop and follow the instructions that are on the screen when it starts up. IMPORTANT: It is very important that you obtain the drivers for your hardware before you do anything to your laptop. In case you didn't know, drivers are basically the instructions for your laptop on how windows (or other operating systems) can get the most out of the hardware in your laptop. To obtain these just go onto the manufactures website and look for drivers and support. Punch in the model # or type of laptop and download all ( yes I mean all) the drivers available for you laptop ( but only you laptop). If you want to restore everything to the factory settings and not do the work, then the easiest way to do this would be to send the laptop into a computer store such as future shop and then they will reset everything for you. The advantage with this is that you don't have to worry because professionals will be doing the work for you so everything is guaranteed to work, the down side is that it might cost you up to $40 ( depends where you go and what they have to do to your laptop). Also you should make your laptop boot from CD/DVD by changing the settings in the BIOS if you plan on formatting the laptop yourself. I knocked the I key off my sony vaio by accident and now it will go back on, but comes off after about 5 minutes of typing. anyone know how to get it back on for good?

Try using a small dab of silicon sealant (any hardware store). Let it set overnight; it's advantage is that you can pry up the key in the future if needed. Do not use enough to glue the key permanently to the computer.

disable startup applications you dont need go to start run type msconfig click the startup tabs at the top uncheck startup items you dont need click apply then ok restart (try checking the internet for the programs you dont need at startup) now download install ccleaner, download.com has one use the cleaner to remove temporary files and temporary internet files. i suggest you dont change anything on the checkbarlist of ccleaner, the default is enough.

disable startup applications you dont need go to start run type msconfig click the startup tabs at the top uncheck startup items you dont need click apply then ok restart (try checking the internet for the programs you dont need at startup) now download install ccleaner, download.com has one use the cleaner to remove temporary files and temporary internet files. i suggest you dont change anything on the checkbarlist of ccleaner, the default is enough.

You have what is known as the Blue Screen of Death..usually a hardware failure like your hard drive. You can use your recovery disk to try to do a "automatic" system repair.. Here is the full guide on that.....just skip down to where it states: XP Repair install http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm If you can't even get your boot disk to pop up before the blue screen then you will need to boot into your bios screen by rebooting and tapping the F1 key. How do I do a system restore with the backup discs on my sony vaio?
My Sony Vaio has an epic virus on it, and I feel like I need to just wipe the hard drive clean and start over. i have the backup discs but I don't know what to do with them. Suggestions? Thanks

Yes when your computer boots you hit F10 either when it gives you a second to do or you can hit F10 a couple of times while it's booting to get the screen up. When you start the steps of system recovery it will walk you through the steps. Recovery will offer you the option to back up your programs on disk usually "it is recommended that you back up all programs etc." If you just select the option to back up, recovery will proceed to walk you through the steps to do this. You could just do it manually yourself before going into recovery, but it's more complicated that way since there's no instructions. Just start recovery and it won't restore without asking you first about the back up. It's not the end of the world if you don't successfully back them up, though. I've dumped my system about a million times and usually I only lose a few things here and there that I can usually just go online and download again. The longer you wait the more chance you have of losing programs to the virus, so I'd do it asap.

Sony Vaio which has a wireless chip
I bought a Sony Vaio which has a wireless chip but I am having problems connecting to my Netgear router, Help?
The Vaio has Vista. I have a Dell laptop that I have a wireless Netgear card for. I shouldn't have to switch that to the Sony right? It should connect automatically. I am IT illiterate, Please Help! I don't know if i havee WEP? How do I check that out? lol

Do you have WEP - basically a password set up on your router when you set it up? If you do, you need to add the settings to your Sony. If it is open and anyone should access, then check you wireless connection on and add a profile in the SONY to look for the router.

the wireless connector should come with a program, and if it doesnt simply go to start>control panel>click on connnections>then internet connections> then search for ur chip there> and then right click and search for signals. now netgear routers are very cheap and overheat. make sure its cool and that u have it setup. it reallly isnt necesary for the setup but make sure the cables are connected and that its cool. and that;s about it. trust me I have netgear and viao laptop too lol :-) what a coincidence.

One of the icons in the bottom right corner should be a red x with 2 little computers. click that and click connect to network. Find your network on the following list (make sure your wlan switch is on) if it prompts you for a wep code you must find it on the software that [probably] came with your router. Or it is in the instruction manual. Although, it may not prompt you at all and connect you right away. If this is so, your network is not secure and you may want to look into that. [nice choice on the laptop btw. but i went linksys with my router : ) ]

How can I make a recovery CD for my sony(vaio) laptop . my laptop model is VGN-FW11M?
I bought a sony vaio 9 months ago, i have not created recovary discs yet. How can i do it now, which discs i need- double layer or normal dvd? What about my data that already i have in the hard disk, i have to backup them, or any other precautions that i have to take?

Hi I would recommend using a normal DVD just in case your drive is not compatible. The recovery fits on 1 standard DVD. Just go to the start menu and open VAIO recovery console and follow the directions. Make sure yourt laptop is plugged into AC power. You will have do back up all of your personal files! The recovery CD restores the computer to brand new like the day you got it. Go through the "Documents and Settings" folder for personal files, music, movies, pictures, etc. Check the download directories of any programs you frequently use for downloading files. Check the directories of any photo editing software you use. Remember to backup any files on the desktop. It's also good to follow up with searches on the C:\ drive for .doc, .xls, .mp3, .jpg, etc to make sure you got everything Tip: You can also run the System Recovery directly off the hard drive (after you have backed up all your files onto a cd/dvd/external HD) When you turn on the computer and see the "VAIO" animation press F10 to open it. Remember, the recovery is not reversible! Once you start it you cannot interrupt it. Never delete the partition on your hard drive either!

If you are replacing it with another version of Windows, then put the Windows CD in before you boot the PC and let it boot from the CD - it should start the install process. Part of the install process will be to reformat the hard drive to prepare it for Windows. I'm not sure about other OS's, but I am reasonably sure they will have similar utilities to prep the hard drive for the OS.

My Sony Vaio laptop came across a graphic problem in which blue things appeared in the scvreen and the text and colour was faded. Slowly, the laptop doesn't turn on now, i've left it with a repair shop and they say it is damaged and may need a change in a mother board? please help? wHAT DO I DO? ANY SOLUTIONS?

Screen problem and they gonna change the motherboard? might as well buy a new laptop then. your laptop's backlight maybe the problem and not the motherboard. these are common problems of laptops. check your laptop: when you press the power button do you hear something or flat dead? does the power light blink? if yes then its the screen that fails and not the motherboard. look for a different repair shop and ask them if they could fix the backlight of your laptop. i don't think this repair shop that you went to knows what they're doing. good luck!

My HP is currently broken and, in the event that it is unfixable, I am considering buying a Sony Vaio. So what I need to know, from Sony Vaio users, is: Do you like it? Does it run well? What kinds of problems do you have with it? Would you recommend it? **I do not want "I read this on the internet" answers. I want actual, personal experience.

between my HP laptop and that old vaio i had, i'd still go with the HP the vaio is a fine laptop, it's just not as clean looking as the HP, and it feels like the HP overall has a better feel it's not like either is better when specs are compared i'd recommend it to a person who doesnt like HP

How about input from someone who repairs these things? Sony's are better built with better quality parts and parts failures are more uncommon than in HPs. Brand new HPs often have hard drive problems -- don't know why but I replace at least 6 a week. There was a bad run of heatsinks that didn't have cooling gel in them, but I think that's licked now. Another bad run of HP 8440ps that had keyboard lights that wont open. Sony's are only beaten out by Lenovo's for quality. Parts that fail in the first year are rare for Lenovos and Sonys. HP runs somewhere in the middle.

Since you didn't provide enough detail on what model your machine is, it's really hard for people to help you out. If you only see Vertical. Scrolls on your pad and not Horizontal.... that means that your machine only has the Vertical build in function. so you cannot really change that. Conclusion: Get a mouse.

I have a sony vaio. I'm very pleased with it. I got mine fully loaded for about $1500. It's amazing, it gets a little hot, but not unlike most laptops. It doesn't have any problems (other than vista) and the silver look is awesome.

The Vaio range of Laptops are pretty good. Slightly more expensive than other makes but you do get a nice looking laptop and good reliability too. Does depend on your budget, as you may be able to pick up a better spec laptop, for less than you would pay for the Vaio. Which ever way you go, the Vaio is a good choice overall. :)

Is there a program i can download?
How do i get my Sony Vaio laptop to autodim when not in use on battery? Is there a program i can download?
It might be called smart dimmer or something, but i've seen other laptops (inc Macs) which dim automatically after a period of time when not touched. This would be great for conserving battery - how do i get it on my Sony Vaio? Can i download the software somewhere? I'm running Vista Home Premium. Thanks!

Sony Vaio Web Apps

I really wanted this Sony Vaio because everything about it is perfect and what I am looking for. (I really wanted a laptop about 13 inches and for it to be light which it is about 4 pounds, not to mention I like the color and chicklet keys.) There aren't many Vaio's that are new at that price since its more of a higher-end model of laptop. If your trying to find a quality laptop under a grand that would compete with a Vaio in terms of system performance, I would consider Gateway. Their new laptops rival the performance and price of Vaio's greatly.

For first, its a nice choice if youre looking for a Windows based laptop, but why dont you checkout the Apple's Macs?, lower prices and you get up to 5 times more than what a Windows based PC offers for a much lower price....

It's an amazing brand. I would say, it's one of the best. Why i like Sony - 1. They are sleek and light weight 2. They have very good build quality 3. Sony computer manufactures quite a lot of computer parts themselves, so they don't just grab things from vendors and throw it all together 4. Price wise they may sound a little on the steeper side, but you will get good discounts, just keep looking 5. On a longer run, the laptop should really be sleek and small and portable. That's all that matters. I have a dell, bought this Feb, and it already looks outdated and junk.

They are fantastic but a little on the expensive end. It would really depend on what you need the laptop for, what components you want, and budget. A good all brand is also Toshiba.

i had one but it was just an average computer. there was nothing special about it for me. i have a mac now and they are the best. but if you prefer pc a sony vaio isnt a bad choice. a dell may be cheaper but the vaio is good but like it said, its just average
