Sony Vaio (VGN-S560P)

My Sony Vaio freezes at 84% when I try to reset the factory settings; how do I get around this?
I don't have the original disks, so I have tried various ways to reset my Sony Vaio (VGN-S560P) to its factory settings without them. I manage to get the reset going, but each time, the progress bar freezes at 84% and goes no further. What can I do about this? Thanks!

There is probably nothing you can do about that... it all depends on exactly it is locking up. Is it locking up because of Bad Ram in that 6 year old laptop? Is it locking up because the hard drive has finally failed (when most hard drives will only last 3 to 5 years, as that is the expected life span of one)? Is it locking up because the system is heavily infected and the recovery data is corrupted? Unfortunately, you can't find the discs for that unit, because you were supposed to make them when the unit was new. So... what can you do now? If you can get hold of an OEM install of Windows XP Home, you can attempt to reinstall Windows that way, but if the Ram or Hard drive is the issue, it won't matter. You will need to diagnose why the recovery process locks up first. With a Windows XP installation disc, you could enter the recovery console and run CHKDSK to see if the hard drive is failing or has bad sectors. You can download Memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com and make a boot disc you can use to check your Ram, to identify or eliminate that as a possibility. In short, you need to identify what is causing the process to lock up. Yes, I realize you are asking that question here... but without getting hands on the unit, none of us can tell you what is causing the unit to lock up. We can only point you in a few directions to check yourself. Unfortunately, without access to all the right tools, you might be left with taking the unit to a computer repair shop. end of line

Start your system with safe mode and disable unwanted services running in background. It can also be due to some virus infection, you can run a full system scan in this regard. Another reason behind Sony Vaio freezing during factory settings can be a registry database. Defrag registry using secure system utility software such as McAfee secured RegInOut. Run disk cleanup utility and update your device drivers. Hope this would help you.

you're gonna have to open up your computer to figure it out. first you need to find out what ports you have available. If you have an AGP or a PCI-Express x16 slot on your motherboard then you will be able to put a card in there. If all you have is PCI left on your motherboard then you will not be able to upgrade. there are PCI cards available but unfortunately they won't be able to increase your performance in gaming. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_E http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Local_Bus after that, check out your Power Supply Unit and find what type of Wattage it has, if it is below 350 watts then you will have to upgrade to a higher capacity, usually around 500 watts. then finally see what kind of connectors are on your PSU, each card is different but usually need 4 or 6 pin connectors in order for them to function. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_psu

Most companies have a general shipping policy and theirs may be a week on the order form, however, they may have known that they could ship out in 1-2 days. So, the question is... is the form telling you it will be shipped within a week or you should receive it within a week? I would call the company or email with your order number, most companies will have information online that you can see. Hope this helps.
