Sony Vaio TX5XN laptops

What causes my Sony Vaio screen to stay black (with just a shadowy image on the screen)?
I have 2 Sony Vaio TX5XN laptops. Machine A works perfectly, Machine B has a very dim display, i.e. the backlight or the inverter is not working. However, when I switched the two lids (screens and all) between the two machines, Machine B still had the dim display and Machine A was still fine. The external display works perfectly off the VGA socket, so it seems that the motherboard is OK. What is causing the backlight to stay off?

Machine B's screen appears to be fine - if it weren't, it would present an image when connected to machine A. It is not the complete video card that is broken, if it were, you would see anything on an external monitor. Clearly, on machine B, something on your motherboard that produces the image and connects to the lid is broken.
