Why is my year 2000 sony vaio laptop very slow and why does it freeze alot?
My sony vaio laptop was made in 2000 and it has windows xp on it. I defragmented the hard drive but its still slow and freezes alot. Why is this?

it may have virus or it does not have much capacity. run an antivirus software and then see. or first check the RAM of your laptop

Sadly, Sony Vaio laptops are not the most robust machines ever, I am quite impressed it has survived that long at all. I have found the construction to be somewhat on the shoddy side. However, if the hardware is still okay for you, there are a few things you can do to revitalize your computer. Firstly, Defrag is not one-size-fits-all fix for a slow computer. If your computer is on the internet, it is very important that you have an up-to-date virus scanner and spyware scanner. Both virus's and spyware can cause a slow computer. If you regularly download software, especially from file sharing sites, there is a strong chance you have installed more than you had bargained for. A lot of so called "free" software includes a lot in the installer that you didn't ask for, which runs in the background and causes your computer to slow down. It is also important that you keep windows up to date. Make sure you make time to scan for updates and install them on a regular basis. Finally, windows is notoriously bad for keeping track of it's DLLs and Registry. If you have installed/uninstalled a lot of software it is likely these things are a mess. The simplest answer would be to back up any important documents (pictures, music, etc) and start again from scratch. If you can, try a linux distribution, for a newcomer, i would recommend ubuntu, it is free and user friendly. You can download it legally and freely at http://www.ubuntu.com/ Linux will get rid of any problems relating to DLLs, Registry and Virus/Spyware. And most of your stuff will work fine. It tends to work really well on older systems as well, and will feel much quicker on your old computer. If you have a lot of windows software you need, I still recommend starting from scratch. Be very selective with what you install. If you are downloading free software, make sure you check google to see if it is known to install spyware/adware/malicious software, and after installing anything scan your computer for virus's and spyware, as well as making sure to schedule regular scans.
